How long have you been doing this?

Since 1983.

David came on in 2004. Danni somewhere around 2019. Paige helped one year and cousin Rhonda has made great contributions when she is visiting her mother.

When do you start?

Usually the day after Thanksgiving.  Starting a few years ago, we  started in early November as cousin Rhonda's arrival motivated to get going.

Then early in the year we inventory supplies and plan for the boxing and decorating theme.

Chocolate is actually ordered in late fall as soon as temperatures from Candyman in Lathrop Missouri. 

How many pieces do you make.

Somewhere around 1000. The peak year was about 1500 pieces.

What types do you make?

Almonds, Peanut, Toffee, Coconut (regular and toasted), Rice Krispies, Cherries, Solids, Cherry Mash, Peppermint Bark, Butterfinger, Coated Pretzels, Dipped Winter Oreos.  All in dark, light and/or white chocolate.

How many pounds of chocolate do you use?

About 60.

How many hours does it take?

4 to clean and prep the chocolate factory, 40-60  to make and another 20 to box, pack and ship and 5 to plan for next year.

What are some of the other procedures you use?

The kitchen is scoured top to bottom. Gloves and hair / beard nets are worn. Washing of hands (and dishes) is non-stop. Chocolate is stored in sealed containers in the spare bedroom with the window cracked.

Have you ever missed a year?

Yes, in 2018 Sandra and David moved from Monument to Colorado Springs in December and the effort would have been too great.

What have been some of the biggest challenges.

The year that Sandra injured her backand could not walk. David carried trays and trays of supplies to her so that the tradition could continue.
